Happy Hearts Saves Lives

Cedar City, Utah, February 25,2018  -- Rachel Anderson, a senior marketing major from Southern Utah University partnered with American Heart Health Association to raise money for those suffering heart disease for her EDGE project. The EDGE project is a program that allows students provide service to his or her community. Southern Utah University provides this program for all students to take and complete before graduating. It is an offered class course where students can participate in a service project while earning college credit for completing. Future employers of Southern Utah University students can view and admire the act of service. Like mentioned above, Rachel Anderson decided to complete her EDGE project with American Heart Health Association and studied the research behind heart health.

1 in every 5 women are affected by heart disease. Rachel wanted to make sure that her community was aware of this disease. Rachel pulled her community together for a week-long fun filled fundraiser. Each day during the week there were competition activities. Teams were divided into multiple groups. The leader of each group were male figures from different organizations on campus. She chose to have male leaders for this fundraiser so that the men can see how much women are affected by this disease. With the help of her sorority sisters of Alpha Phi, Rachel had a very successful week.

They all competed against each other to be the team to raise the most money and win the most activities. At the end of the week the boys competed in a fun pageant. The winner of the week was crowned at the pageant as Mr. Heartthrob. All the money that was made was directly given to the American Heart Health Association. Rachel hopes to have made her community more aware of the importance of heart health. Raising over $10,000 in just one week is an amazing accomplishment.

Rachel would like to thank her friends and family that supported her throughout the whole week. She says, “I had the most stressful yet amazing week of my life.” She also mentions that she, “would love to partner again with American Heart Health Association in the future.”
